About Alvaro Montoya, MD

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Alvaro Montoya specializes in the comprehensive clinical evaluation and surgical treatment of diseases of the heart and great vessels, including coronary artery disease, valvular disease and aortic aneurysms.

He trained in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He stayed at Loyola Medical Center as a Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery practicing Adult Cardiac Surgery and was a pioneer in Heart and Lung transplantation. He held several other academic positions including the University of Illinois and Rush University where he was the director of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is now the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Miami VA Healthcare System. He is Board Certified in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Research Interests

Dr. Montoya’s research interests include outcomes in Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Surgical Treatment of atrial Fibrillation. He is also very interested in the training of the fellows and residents in cardiac surgery.
