Patient Care & Services

The Burn Center's dedicated and highly skilled team of surgeons, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, information science specialists, and nutritionists, provides the most advanced medical care to victims of burn injuries throughout their hospitalization and rehabilitation process. Each year more than 200 burn victims are admitted to the Burn Center. In addition, the Burn Center provides burn care, rehabilitation therapy, and follow-up care on an outpatient basis, with more than 2,000 patient visits annually.

The Burn Center's five-bed Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU), located at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center's Ryder Trauma Center, is a state-of-the-art facility providing the best care science and medicine can offer. Each BICU patient is isolated in a separate room for protection against infection and cross-contamination.

The Burn Center serves burn victims with the most modern equipment available and is staffed by dedicated personnel committed to saving and improving their lives. The Center also provides ongoing public services in the area of education and prevention. Approximately 430,000 children have been reached by our burn prevention programs. Children are taught what to do if they are in danger of being burned by fire, liquid, or electricity.

The Burn Center helps send burn-injured children in South Florida to Burn Camp. Many burn team members volunteer as "burn buddies" or camp counselors for the pediatric patients they have helped in the hospital and clinic. At Burn Camp, the children are free to enjoy themselves and experience new adventures in a nurturing and supportive environment without concern of scars or physical limitations.
