Key Elements of Aftercare Program
- Provide continual personal support to donor families through telephone contact, correspondence, and visits with the Aftercare Coordinator.
- Distribute literature and information to facilitate an understanding of the grieving process.
- Offer educational interventions to promote better understanding of brain death and to dispel misconceptions about the donation process.
- Conduct support groups to provide a non-judgmental forum for expressing thoughts, concerns, and emotions with other individuals who have shared a similar experience.
- Provide referrals to therapists specializing in death, dying, and bereavement.
- Coordinate memorial tributes for families, providing an opportunity to express their love for the deceased and share in a sense of pride in the contribution to the community.
- Offer an opportunity for correspondence between donor families and the recipients of their loved one's organs and tissues.*
- As an educational component in workshops and seminars, the Aftercare Program offers health care professionals an intimate look at the donor family perspective.
* The current policy of Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) is that no meetings of the two parties will be encouraged or facilitated by any OPO personnel, including those parties expressing mutual agreement to a meeting. Written correspondence, without revealing identities, is encouraged between donor families and recipients.
