Division Overview
The Division of Liver/Gastrointestinal Transplant at the University of Miami School of Medicine's DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery is continually ranked among the top five liver transplant centers (by volume) in the country. The center strives to provide life-saving transplantation for all types of patients, regardless of the severity or complexity of diagnosis.
Under the direction of Dr. Andreas Tzakis, who joined the division as its director in 1994, the Liver/GI Transplant program has achieved national recognition, due to the improved success rates of both liver and intestinal transplantation. Today, the division has become one of the leading liver transplant program in the southeastern United States, reflecting the center's ongoing commitment to providing patients and their families with quality organ transplant and aftercare for the past two decades.
There are many reasons why patients choose the Division of Liver/ Gastrointestinal Transplant at the University of Miami School of Medicine's DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. These include:
- The Liver Transplant Program received Medicare approval in February of 1995.
- The Liver Transplant Program performs approximately 185 transplants annually and another 20-25 intestinal transplants. Approximately 20% of this volume is pediatric transplant recipients.
