Patient Care/Services
The highly skilled transplant team at the Division of Liver/Gastrointestinal Transplant provides patients with the most advanced and innovative surgical interventions in liver and gastrointestinal transplantation, including the latest procedures for intestinal transplant available anywhere. A variety of medical management techniques and new immunosuppressive therapies for patients are available.
Depending on each patient's particular diagnosis, transplantation requirements will vary. A personalized plan could include liver transplant alone or may be performed in combination with transplantation of islet cells (for insulin-dependent diabetics), a kidney (if there is chronic kidney disease), or an intestine.
Many recipients are able to return to work within three to six months after the transplant. In fact, many patients may feel better even before leaving the hospital. However, this does not mean that transplantation is not without its problems or adjustments. Each recipient's circumstances are unique and so are their outcomes.
