Welcome

The word "philanthropy" comes from the Greek for "love of mankind". Webster's defines philanthropy as "Works or endeavors…intended to increase the well-being of humanity." This definition reflects the mission of the University of Miami School of Medicine to educate, conduct research, provide health care and contribute to the community. Philanthropy plays a significant role in each part of the School of Medicine's mission.

The School of Medicine has benefited greatly from the generosity of grateful patients, alumni and the South Florida community. Over the years, philanthropy has provided funds to build academic and research facilities, such as the Batchelor Children's Research Institute, the Lois Pope LIFE Center, the Diabetes Research Institute, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the Ryder Trauma Center and the UM/JM Burn Center.

Philanthropy also has provided funds to recruit research faculty and fund research programs. There are a number of important programs and vehicles for philanthropy at the School of Medicine and in the Department of Surgery in the areas of education and scholarships, endowed chairs and fellowships for faculty, research funds and physical plant for clinical and research facilities.
