DeWitt Daughtry, M.D.
The Department of Surgery has had no better friend over the years than Dr. DeWitt Daughtry. As a prominent surgeon and pioneer in thoracic surgery in Miami, Dr. Daughtry was chosen to be a member of the original Planning Committee for the establishment of a School of Medicine at the University of Miami. From the very beginning, Dr. Daughtry has played an important role for the school and in the Department of Surgery. In order to help build the Department of Surgery, Dr. Daughtry made a donation to establish the Daughtry Chair in Thoracic Surgery, one of the first endowed chairs at the medical school. Soon after, he established a second endowment, the Daughtry Chair in General Surgery. In 1998, Dr. Daughtry made a substantial donation to the department. In gratitude, the Department of Surgery was renamed the DeWitt Daughtry Department of Surgery.
How to Participate in Building a Great Medical School
One of the critical measures of the School of Medicine's ability to grow and become one of the leading academic medical centers in the country will hinge on building a large endowment. Endowments have been the critical component in the building of great universities like Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins and Stanford – and an increased endowment will be a essential in building the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Endowments are a source of funds provided though philanthropy, for education, research and faculty. Examples are endowed chairs, scholarships and research funds.
