Vascular Surgery

The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Miami Health System/Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is leading the region in its recruitment of patients for the following important (promising) clinical trials:

• Aastrom Biosciences investigative therapy involving autologous bone marrow derived tissue cells used as an intramuscular injection to the ischemic limb of patients with critical limb eschemia to improve blood flow

• The Embolic Protection with Reverse Flow (EMPIRE) Study for patients at high risk of carotid endartectomy was pioneered by Juan Parodi, M.D., a preeminent member of the UHealth/Miller faculty. The protection system enables physicians to perform carotid interventions knowing that liberated eboli will be safely directed away from the brain. Flow reversal eliminates the need to cross the lesion unprotected and the associated risks and challenges
